Summary
Adds a “None of the Above” option to judicial elections and requires vacancies be filled by election.
Biblical Reasoning
Good judges are absolutely essential for Biblical liberty and justice… Cleary it is a necessary part of Christian citizenship to try to see good judges elected, who are a visible and active representation of God and His justice in our world. In the Lord’s Prayer, we ask that God’s will might be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Isaiah 33:22 says “The LORD is our Judge, The LORD is our Lawgiver, The LORD is our King; He will save us.” We seek to honor our Savior by electing lawgivers and governors who will honor Him by protecting and serving His people. And we must also diligently seek to elect men who will be faithful judges as they bring God’s justice to the earth.
Election Results
Voters rejected the ‘None of the Above’ judicial election option (56% No).
Full PEAPAC Analysis
PEAPAC Explanation: If passed, Measure 21 would put a “None of the above” selection on all elections for judges. To be elected, a candidate would have to get more votes than “None of the above.” New elections would continue to be held until someone got more votes than “None of the above.” Additionally, judicial vacancies currently filled by the Governor would be filled by elections.
PEAPAC Recommendation: Good judges are absolutely essential for Biblical liberty and justice. This Measure increases competition for judicial races, which we strongly support. We also believe it would result in more pro-family candidates challenging liberal judges. We urge a Yes vote on Measure 21
PEAPAC Commentary: Be honest. How much do you know about the last few judges you voted for? But, hey, there was no one running against them, right? Ever wondered why? Well, lawyers are understandably reluctant to run against a judge they may soon be up before. But if a judge fails to receive more votes than nobody, opponents are more likely to surface and win. Enhanced competition will result in better judges, and that’s the purpose of this Measure. For years, we have tried to help you make good decisions as you elect lawmakers, and approve or disapprove ballot measures. But if our judges don’t uphold the laws that are passed, or if they reinterpret them in such a way as to negate the original intent, all of our work has been in vain. Time after time, ballot measures have been overturned, watered down, or kept from the ballot by over-reaching judges.
Cleary it is a necessary part of Christian citizenship to try to see good judges elected, who are a visible and active representation of God and His justice in our world. In the Lord’s Prayer, we ask that God’s will might be done on earth as it is in heaven. The implication for this Measure is that Christian citizenship mandates that we work to get good judges elected, who are a visible and active representation of God and His justice in our world. This Measure goes a long way towards helping us accomplish this vital task. Please vote Yes on Measure 21.
